Zweizz: The Yawn of the
New Age

Self-described as “necrotech”, ‘The Yawn of the New Age’ is
the debut
album of Zweizz, the solo project of Svein Egil
Hatlevik (DHG, Fleurety).
Intro of ‘The Yawn of The New Age’ is the shimmery virtual
Tinkerbell
morphing into metal armored fiber optic terrorist on a
mission which
soon turns ugly in the form of an aggressive full blown
bombardment
of shrill metallic and fuzzed out misanthropic blakk noise.
The vox sounds like extremely distorted and drowned out sound of
old TV footage- reminiscent of political speeches or from
early
interviews with serial killers on death row. ‘Rævkjør’ for
sure…
as the lethal code is opened it insidiously corrupts all files,
fries all circuits..crackling as it destroys everything in it’s
path
and makes it’s way towards the central system.
‘Nowadays Only
The Boring Everything Is So Frustrating’ is an insane
mix of what
sounds like daily life in the West juxtaposed with daily life in
the
East. Wailing from a minaret maybe mixed with machinegun fire then
with
what seems to be noises of a bustling overcrowded city in
India..
Ending with what sounds like heavy steel beams for a highrise
being
pounded into urban pavement.‘Blacker Than Darkness’ is post
apocalyptic
black noise meets black metal vox with video game
noises.
’Thank You In The Face’ has an electronic sort of Stephen
Hawking
type vox over futuristic industrial blakk noise and atmosphere
which brought
‘Bladerunner’ to mind. ‘Catacombe dei Cappucini’ has a
drugged-out on
hallucinogens vibe, lost in Palermo..then wandering
amongst the
lifelike mummies of the Capuchin catacombs
‘Your System
Sucks’ is thrashier in a blakk way but not in any old school
sense.
‘Sawbeam’ sounds like a lasar saw slicing through flesh and bone
and
had me thinking of the effects on the Wumpscutt track ‘Dr.
Thodt’.
Masturbatory Attention Deficit Disorder is blakk noise over
what
sounds like a pop ballad culminating in a squirting
crescendo.
’Musick is Organized Sound’ reminded me a bit of
Nattefrost’s
‘Terrorist’ album in that the electronic distortion
sometimes sounds like
bodily functions..this later transforms into what
sounds like the barking of
electronic poodles and a female screaming.
’Big Black Dick’ is very
misogynistic and disturbing with the intro
probably taken from a real porn flick.
It’s the darkest and most
frightening of the tracks with some highly distorted
screaming, horror
movie ‘dungeon’ noises and an eerie ‘angelic’ chorus.
‘Amateurs’ is
abrasive rigor mortis keyboard pounding yet it’s
interestingly
atmospheric in a soundtrack sort of way.
All songs have a basic structure and rhythm with
varying degrees
of chaotic elements in the heavily distorted
instrumentation and electronica.
Will also add that these tracks would
be fantastic on the right soundtrack.
This release will likely appeal to a wide range of
adventurous listeners:
from fans of dark electronica to black metal to
psychedelic rock.
Sidenote: I reviewed without lyrics, although most of
the vocals are
obscured by noise and music so lyrically speaking- it’s
left to the
imagination anyway. Do try to listen to this release
without any
distractions, so as not to miss any of the complexity.
