02-05-2007 Watain: Sworn to the Dark Review by
©Scarlet www.whoresofchaos.com
'Legions of The Black Light' slither under an intro of epic
blakk Swedish magnificence that gives way to an old school blakk n'roll groove
of snake charming guitars enhanced by a more death metal than blakk
type of production. Ravenous is the buzzing blakk metal whirl of
'Satan's Hunger' as it charges forth in a relentless gallop towards
the black sun. 'The Light That Burns The Sun' now blackens his heart
and sets it afire as he becomes one with the black flame. 'Sworn
to the Dark' is liberation by a knife through the heart. A drink from
'The Serpent's Chalice' transforms him into a god eternally, entranced not
by beauty but by 'Darkness and Death'. In the end the stars are
swallowed by 'Stellarvore', exploding and imploding into a massive
classical Saturnian splendor by way of a spectacular battery in
pounding choral doom. The excellence of lyrics, instrumentation and
composition are a worthy tribute to a dark god.
