Vegard Fimland:Interview 2008 by Scarlet Metal & www.whoresofchaos.com
Scarlet: Greetings Vegard. Would you tell me about what
or whom inspired you to become a photographer?
Vegard: My interest for photography began about ten years
ago, when I started to play around with my father’s old camera. I
quickly discovered that this was something I really enjoyed
doing. Since I’ve always been into rock music, many rock
photos/photographers and album covers have deeply inspired my work.
Scarlet: Is still photography your main interest
or will you also be making films or music videos?
Vegard: Still photography is definitively my discipline, but
you never know..maybe I’ll also work with motion pictures later in life.
Scarlet: From your portfolio I see that you work equally
well with both color and black&white. Do you have a preference?
Vegard: No, I like working equally well with b/w and color,
each has it’s own unique advantages and limitations.
Scarlet: Have any of your photographic experiences been
especially memorable?
Vegard: I had a really great time with the Trelldom shoot.
They of course had strong ideas themselves about how the visual
expression should be. I’ve known Gaahl, Valgard and Sir for many
years, so we had good communication throughout the process- I think
that this is an important factor in getting a successful result. Also,
before the shoot, I listened to “Til Minne” (Trelldom album) quite
frequently for creative inspiration. In final preparation, we spent the
day before the shoot together discussing, sharing ideas and planning
the scenes. The photo shoot took place in Espedalen where Gaahl
lives..the weather conditions and light were ideal that day. In the end,
we were all extremely satisfied with the result.
Scarlet: Two of your most outstanding photos made me think
of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'. The Have you been influenced by any 60's
photographers?
Vegard: Hitchcock is great. There are so many amazing
photographers that have influenced me. Two great photographers that
have worked with music are Gered Mankowitz and Mick Rock. Together with
great bands, they created many classic images during the 60’s.
