Audiopain: 1986
By ©Scarlet Metal & www.whoresofchaos.com
March 1, 2007

It all began with HAE, this group's former ever-morphing project
before they settled into the blakk thrash band known as Audiopain.
Although based in 80's style old school tradition, minute
traces of their versatile musical past shine through pinholes, only
to be extinguished by the predominating blakkness.
Sverre Daehli possesses one of the most chilling thrash vox
in existence. Imagine what an ice cold reptilian-alien demon hybrid
would sound like..a creature conjured up by an obscure Tibetan
black lodge and there you have it!
Take a deep breath, this is a metal expression of the human condition
from it's ancient beginnings to it's end..in full digital technicolor.
Overall, not a one dull moment from start to finish.

Talons tear through the trapezius as the great winged beast of
The Scourge (track one) hoists up the hardcore headbanger
"to ride the winds of hell". Heavy metal saturated intro drama gives
way to brutal arctic blast thrashing yet riffing remains surreal,
plentiful in twists and turns in tempo..as unpredictable as the ride itself.
From about 50 ft. the creature then drops the human as it rolls back
down into the gutter only to land at the feet of the remotely controlled
'Mechanic Commando'. Flashbacks of 'Demon Seed'/1977 sci-fi film
and a few kicks to the human's ribs are it's first sobering moments.
It feigns unconsciousness as the "the technocrats" view the carnage
from their monitor screens.
As timeless and elusive as old Jack (the Ripper) himself, the insatiable
homicidal hunger of 'The Hunt' ensues. The pace is feeding frenzied,
with eternal thrashing terror and pain being the nature of his game.
A relentless mid paced march moves invisibly through the mist, as
the entity emerges once again.. this time jumping into Apollyon
who gives an electrifying wraithlike performance in 'Gospels From Hell'
before turning everything divine into stone.
The whip cracks as it breaks into the deadly fast paced gallop of
'Relinquished' giving way to writhing agony and tortured vocals as it
skids and spins on the black ice. Brings to mind 'plastination',
the preservation process invented by Gunther Von Hagens
in 1977. The technique was used on the dead humans of the "art"
exhibitions of Dr.Von Hagens. 1977 was also the year killer
Gary Gilmore donated his corneas before his execution,
inspiring British punk rock band 'The Adverts'to write and release
"Gary Gilmore's Eyes".Note that 1977 breaks down to a 6, having
mentioned three times in this review = '666'.

Enter the slow paced intro procession of 'Glorious Beings' et al, only
to be pushed off of the edge of the universe by His Royal Madness
Sir Maniac, the Prince of serpents wearing a grin..who does a
smashing good job on this grand finale. The most creative and
exhilarating in atmosphere, also brilliantly composed and executed.
A perfect ending to this blakkened arctic blast.

Highly recommended, and don't be misled by the title.
It is definetly not entirely retro (80's).

1986: is the second release (reissue) of Audiopain.
Also remastered and contains original artwork.
