Dødheimsgard: Supervillain Outcast
Review by ©Scarlet Metal & www.whoresofchaos.com
April 24, 2007

Eight years later Dødheimsgard stuns the world with Supervillain Outcast- the brutally progressive apocalyptic sound of the final culture clash. It's a metal oxymoron covered in blakk industrial soot and the soundtrack of someone's futuristic nightmare- the Draugen kills Jaani Dushman kills the Supervillain Outcast. In both Hindi and Urdu, "dushman" means enemy and was also a 1979 Bollywood horror film about a jilted 'husband to be' turned homicidal (and undead) supermonster. Based on the way the band looked at Inferno, I'd venture to guess that this just may have been part of the inspiration behind this release. So light some candles, paint your face blue, burn some Nag Champa and get into the lotus position only not for too long because this music makes you want to move a few tracks down the road. Various vibes from the former projects of all six members are ever present  in one way or another throughout. However, the atmosphere remains unique much to the credit of these crafty Kings of samples. Instrumentation is creatively mutated third wave blakk metal with a serious multitude of otherworldly (not blakk) overtones and undertones. Enter 'Dushman' in an intro of thundering footsteps over piped out traditional Indian music as tinny as temple toys- a perfect intro to ‘Vendetta Assassin’ which mows down everything in it’s path. Flayed, sliced and hung to dry on the ceiling fan creating a unique splatter is 'The Snuff Dreams Are Made Of'. 'Secret Identity' is cool  and calculating yet soothing. 'Apocalypticism' a blakked out dance groove number heavy on the funk elements. 'All Is Not Self' wistful eerie straight vox is bizarrely interwoven over blakk metal noises and voices, some of which (in the grunts and snarls on this track) sound like an electronic Shamaatae (of Arckanum). ‘Supervillain Serum’ is the electrified blakkness of a remarkable atmosphere.‘21st Century Devil’ is a fitting end to this mayhem, extremely catchy yet tortured in an epic sort of way with an eerie angelic eunuch quality to the final outro.

Highly recommended to fans of  Virus, Arcturus, Ved Buens Ende, Gehenna, Ulver, Code (some of the member’s other projects) and ‘The Matrix’ soundtrack (first one).
This is a mutation of third wave blakk metal and bears little semblance to second wave traditional Norwegian blakk metal.
